I get an error “No such user code” trying to get into Motive Power. How do I get past it?

The initial user code for the main real data and the learn sample data  program is SW (Service Writer). If you change codes it is your responsibility to make a record of the new codes.

The install program tells me that I cannot run Motive Power on my computer. What does that mean?

One of three things could be wrong. Your operating system may be too old. Motive Power 3 requires a Windows XP or later operating system. You may not have enough RAM. We recommend 2GB of RAM minimum for reliable operation of Motive Power 3 on the server and 1GB on each workstation. You may not have enough hard drive space available. You should have at least 4GB of drive space free on the server machine before installing Motive Power 3.

Why do I get a message “You haven’t installed data files engraved with your company name” when I try to start the main Motive Power program?

You have not properly installed the private engraved file(s) for your company. You may have received these file(s) on a disk or via e-mail. Copy these file(s) to the main Motive Power folder (usually named MotivePower3) under the Program Files folder. The next time you run Motive Power it will automatically update your company information. (Note:for Motive Power 3.0, the folder is probably named MotivePower2.)

I get the message “Can’t find database and log files to attach”. What do I do?

You experienced some kind of failure during the installation process. You should stop SQL server if it is running and uninstall Motive Power. Restart the computer and then run the Setup again.

I am getting an error 1931 during the installation. What should I do?

The error 1931 format reads like this" Installer cannot update \xxxxxxxx.xxx because the file is protected by Windows. You may need to update your Operating System for this program to work correctly".  Windows does not allow programs to update files in certain areas. The Installer is trying to install a newer version of the program xxxxxxxx.xxx and Windows is stopping it.

Pick "Okay" and let the install continue. In most cases Motive Power will work fine. It it does not, then you need to install the latest service pack for your operating system. Service packs are available for free download at www.microsoft.com

How do I transfer Motive Power 3.5 over to a new computer?

On the old computer look at the settings screen and note down the version number. Do a short term backup inside Motive Power. Make sure you have a good copy of everything that is in the BackThisUp folder. Install the new program from the internet. Once installed run each Motive Power shortcut. The Learn shortcut should get you into the program. The main shortcut should give you a message about engraving not being done.

Check the version number of your new copy. The version number is on the sign in screen and on the Settings screen. If you are going from any version of Motive Power 3.5.x to any newer version you are good. If the version on your old machine is newer than the current download you will need to contact us to get the later file.

Next, copy the Program Files/MotivePower3/BackThisUp folder from your old machine, replacing the one on your new machine. Please note that if your new machine is running 64 bit Windows, the folder on the new machine will be Program Files (x86)\MotivePower3. Click the Windows start button, then all programs then Motive Power then Restore Short Term Backup.

That is what you need to do to move a single user Motive Power 3.5 installation to a new computer. If you are upgrading more than one computer use the Motive Power Help system. Look under Introduction, Installing Motive Power, Preparing for Additional Computers for details.

How do I transfer Motive Power 3.0 over to a new computer?

On the old computer look at the settings screen and note down the version number. Do a short term backup inside Motive Power. Make sure you have a good copy of everything that is in the BackThisUp folder. On the new computer, install Motive Power 3.0 using a copy of the distributable, MotivePower3510.exe. Once installed run each Motive Power shortcut. The Learn shortcut should get you into the program. The main shortcut should give you a message about engraving not being done.

Check the version number of Motive Power on your new machine. The version number is on the sign in screen and on the Settings screen. If you are going from any version of Motive Power 3.0 to any newer version up to 3.0.83 you are good. If the version on your old machine is newer than the one on your new machine, you may need to contact us to get help moving to the later version of Motive Power 3.0.

Next, copy the Program Files/MotivePower2/BackThisUp folder from your old machine, replacing the one on your new machine. Please note that if your new machine is running 64 bit Windows, the folder on the new machine will be Program Files (x86)\MotivePower2. Click the Windows start button, then all programs then Motive Power then Restore Short Term Backup.

That is what you need to do to move a single user Motive Power 3.0 installation to a new computer. If you are installing more than one computer use the Motive Power Help system. Look under Introduction, Installing Motive Power, Preparing for Additional Computers for details.

I am having trouble transferring my Motive Power data to my new computer. What should I do?

When you make a short term backup from the daily screen in Motive Power 3.5, all of your current data goes into a file MPowerSQLDataV11.bkp in the BackThisUp folder. Other subfolders in BackThisUp contain images of of Estimates, Invoices, and Graphics. Run Motive Power and pick the help button, click on index and enter backup for more details.

When you make a long term backup you should backup the entire BackThisUp folder. When you have this long term backup you can take it to another machine and restore it and then use the Motive Power Program Menu command to restore the short term backup from the long term backup that you just transferred.

If the two computers are using different versions of Windows you need to make sure that your backup software can restore a backup made on the first version of Windows to a machine running the second version of Windows.

If you have a problem transferring data to another machine was the Motive Power program completely closed at the time you did the long term backup? If not, any open files may have been skipped. Does the restore option of your long term backup overwrite existing files of the same name or not? The problem in getting a good transfer is often that the restore program will claim to have run but it did not replace any existing files of the same name.

To test this go into the machine that you will restore to and rename the BackThisUp folder to BackThisUpOld. Run the restore and see if it makes a new BackThisUp folder. If not then the problem is in your backup/restore program or in the way you are using it. In this case you will need to study your backup program or contact the supplier of that program. Since there are so many different ways to run backup on a Windows computer we can't re-create the documentation for each release of each backup program

Note: if you are running Motive Power 3.0, your current data is kept in a file called BackThisUp\MPowerSQLDataV10.bkp.

I am running GarageKeeper 2000. Does my data transfer over to Motive Power?

We have software to convert your GarageKeeper 2000 customers and  vehicles to Motive Power. You can also view your old GarageKeeper 2000 invoices from inside Motive Power 3. Your GarageKeeper 2000 inventory file can be used to create the Motive Power parts catalog.

I am getting an error 1911. What should I do?

Here is what Install Shield says about your problem. : Error 1911 can be caused by missing dependencies, locale-specific components, corrupted object files, and several other causes. It is a bit of a catch-all message for COM registration problems." The error message will have a file name in it, for example msado15.dll You can register a file manually. To do that you must first find out where the file resides on your computer. Search all files and folders for the file name in the error message. If you see several of them the one in the Windows\System32 folder or the Program Files\Common Files folder is most likely the one you want. Here is how you register that msado15.dll file by hand. -Click the Start button -click the Run button - enter the following line exactly as you see it, including the double quotation marks. You need the double quotes because of the space in between program and files, common and files. At the run prompt enter: regsvr32.exe "c:\program files\common files\system\ado\msado15.dll" Write down any error messages you see. If the .dll file registers correctly, re-run the Motive Power installation.

When I install the Motive Power Workstation on a new machine I don't see the MotivePower3 share. I am sure that I shared the MotivePower3 folder with the correct permissions on the machine hosting SQL Server. What is wrong?

The machine you are installing on is not in the same workgroup or not in the same IP address segment as the machine hosting SQL Server. Check the workgroup by looking at the identification tab of the Network Neighborhood properties in Windows 98 or go to Control Panel then System then choose the Computer Name tab in Windows XP or later. Check the IP segment by reviewing the configuration properties for the IP settings in the network interface setup. Most of the time you want the segment to be 192.168.0.xxx where xxx is between 0 and 255 and is different for each machine. You may see that your machine is set to get an IP address automatically. This is fine as long as all machines in the workgroup use this setting.
Note: if you are running Motive Power 3.0, the share will probably be called MotivePower2.

When I install the Motive Power Workstation on a new machine I don't see the SQL Server machine. I am sure that Motive Power 3 is working correctly on at least one other station. What is wrong?

Either

The machine you are installing on is not in the same workgroup or not in the same IP address segment as the machine hosting SQL Server. Check the workgroup by going to Windows Control Panel then System then choose the Computer Name tab.

Or

The firewall on the server is blocking your requests for the information. This will happen automatically on XP SP2 or later Microsoft operating systems and with many firewall programs. They turn everything off and you have to enable the items you actually use. Go to Control Panel, then Security, then under Manage Security Settings pick Windows Firewall. Click on Exceptions and then Add Port. Give the port a name. Enter 135 for the port number and click TCP. Choose Change Scope and click My network (subnet) only.

Motive Power 3 does this automatically during installation.

I already own SQL Server 2008 R2. What do I need to know to install Motive Power 3.5?

Motive Power 3.5 uses an instance of SQL Server named CAI3. Motive Power can install its own instance of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Express, or it can use an instance of SQL Server 2008 R2 that you provide.

If you want to provide an instance of SQL Server for Motive Power to use, you must install a new instance named CAI3. The administrator login must be sa with password JustForNow. (Motive Power will change this the first time you run it.) You should install the CAI3 instance first, then install Motive Power 3.5 Server Only on the same machine. The first time you run Motive Power, click [Cancel] when the progam displays "The installer will continue by setting up the SQL data engine." Run Motive Power again, and the program should attach its database to CAI3.

If you want to let Motive Power supply the instance of SQL Express named CAI3, simply run the Motive Power 3.5 Server Only installer. This installs both SQL Express and the Motive Power 3.5. The first time you run Motive Power, click [OK] when the progam displays "The installer will continue by setting up the SQL data engine." Microsoft's SQL Server 2008 R2 Express installer will run. When it has finished, run Motive Power again, and the program should attach its database to CAI3.

In both cases, if you want to install the Motive Power Workstation on a second computer, you should follow the instructions in the Help file for "Preparing for Additional Computers." Then you should run the Motive Power 3.5 Workstation installer on the second machine. You should hook it up to the CAI3 instance of SQL Server on the first machine (via the Motive Power Helper program which is a registry editor that comes up during the install).

I already own SQL Server 2005. What do I need to know to install Motive Power 3.0?

Motive Power 3.0 uses an instance of SQL Server named CAI2. Motive Power can install its own instance of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express, or it can use an instance of SQL Server 2005 that you provide.

If you want to provide an instance of SQL Server for Motive Power to use, you must install a new instance named CAI2. The administrator login must be sa with password JustForNow. (Motive Power will change this the first time you run it.) You should install the CAI2 instance first, then install Motive Power 3 Server Only on the same machine. The first time you run Motive Power, click [Cancel] when the progam displays "The installer will continue by setting up the SQL data engine." Run Motive Power again, and the program should connect to the database CAI2.

If you want to let Motive Power supply the instance of SQL Express named CAI2, simply run the Motive Power Server Only installer. This installs both SQL Express and the Motive Power 3. The first time you run Motive Power, click [OK] when the progam displays "The installer will continue by setting up the SQL data engine." Microsoft's SQL Server 2005 Express installer will run. When it has finished, run Motive Power again, and the program should connect to the database CAI2.

In both cases, if you want to install the Motive Power Workstation on a second computer, you should run the Motive Power Workstation installer on the second machine. You should hook it up to the CAI2 instance of SQL Server on the first machine (via the Motive Power Helper program which is a registry editor that comes up during the install).

My install does not complete but I get no error messages. What should I do?

We use InstallShield to manage the details of getting Motive Power running on your computer. When you get stopped without a message you have something running that InstallShield can't cope with or you have a security problem. Windows security will not tell you why it failed. This is by design. You don't want something that violates your security settings telling you how to get around the security.

First, break your internet connection, stop your anti-virus or firewall program, make sure you have administrator permission, and run the install again. If that does not succeed, follow this procedure.

  • Create a new empty file for the log to use. Depending on the cause of the failure, it may not be able to create a file from within InstallShield. The easiest way is to bring up Notepad and then save the empty file. Use the Save As and name the file MyLog123.txt and save it to the Temp folder.
  • Use the Start button and then Run. Browse to the setup that you are trying to install. In most cases it will be the folder you used to save the download.
  • Once that path appears in the Run dialog box, place your cursor after the .exe (If your path has any spaces in any of the file names this line will have quotes around it. In that case position yourself right after the closing quote) Enter the following right after the .exe or .exe"
    (space)/v"/l(space)c:\temp\MyLog123.txt"
where (space) means one press of the space bar The single letters used are V and L. Depending on the font you may not be able to tell that the second of those letters is a lower case l. You MUST use lower case for the v and the l
a typical line will look like this
    e:\MotivePower\setup.exe /v"/l c:\temp\MyLog123.txt"
  • After the installation quits, look at the MyLog123.txt file to find out why it did not work. If you can't understand what to fix, e-mail the file to support@motivepower.biz and include details on what was displayed when it stopped and the last responses you entered before the failure.

SQL Server 2008 R2 fails to install. When I look in Program Files or Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log\Summary.txt I see this error: "Configuration error description: '' is not a valid login or you do not have permission". How do I fix this?

It is possible that you have used the same name for the machine itself and for the user logged in while attempting to install SQL Server 2008 R2. If this is the case un-install SQL server and change either the machine name or the name of user with administrator privileges who is doing the install. Next delete the registry key VB and VBA\MotivePower. Click on the Motive Power 3.5 desktop icon and you will be asked to permit the SQL Server installer to run again. Click here for details.

The SQL Server part of the installation fails. When I look at the log in Program Files, Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\Summary I see a message that the sa password does not meet strong password requirements. What do I need to do?

When installing on full Windows Server you will get this message if your server has been configured to require stronger passwords. Server 2008 R2 defaults to requiring stronger passwords. To install SQL Server you need to lower this security temporarily. To do this use the Windows key or start button and type in Local. One of the choices presented will be local policies. Open that and click on password policies. Double click the item “Password must meet complexity requirements” and change it to disabled.

Do the regular installation of Motive Power and SQL Server. When the installer is finished click on the main and learn icons to hook them up to the CAI3 instance of SQL Server. Go back to the local policies and set the item Password must meet complexity requirements to enabled.

This occurs because Motive Power uses a temporary password during the installation process. When you connect the program to the CAI3 instance, the passwords are updated to ones that meet the complexity requirement.

If you found out about this problem half way through the installation you can still save some of your work. Un-install SQL Server. Remove the Motive Power 3.5 entry from the registry under VB and VBA. Make the local policy change described above. Click on the Motive power 3.5 desktop icon again and it will offer to install SQL server. When finished run the main and learn programs to hook up to the CAI3 instance. Change the Local policy back to require complex passwords..
